Filed under: A while back I wrote about feeling . Missing the big city I whined a little bit about the lack of diversity in my town and complained about feeling somewhat bored here. Well that's about to change. My husband has been offered a great job and we are moving. We are leaving small and rural about as far behind as we possibly can. We are moving to New York City. We have known this was coming since before Christmas but it wasn't a done deal until recently. We've kept quiet about it and only told a few family members because there was one person who needed to be told first: Ellie. Ellie was only 3�-years-old when we moved to Boise from upstate New York and was completely unfazed by the change. But she's now 7� and has many friends and classmates that she will be sad to leave behind. When my husband returned from yet another trip to New York this weekend we knew the time had come to break the news. We sat her down and told her we had some very exciting news for her. I watched her face and braced myself for the worst as my husband turned her little world upside down. I had butterflies in my stomach and a part of me wanted to stop him before he uttered the words that would change her life forever. I held my breath and waited for her reaction. Her first words broke my heart a little. "Can I bring a friend?" When I explained that her friends couldn't move with us she had a sad face but said very little. Then she asked if she could get back to playing Webkinz. Ellie is the type of kid who holds things in and must be drawn out to express her feelings. Not wanting to push it I let her go back to her game and gave her some space. Later when I was giving her a bath she started asking questions. Will we have a house there? Where will I go to school? Can we see the Statue of Liberty? We are going to wait until school is out before we make the move and to my complete and total shock Ellie seems excited and happy about it. Maybe she doesn't completely comprehend what this means and I fully expect some resistance and tears as the move date approaches. But now that the cat is out of the bag I am relieved and beginning to feel a little excited about it myself. In the meantime we have scheduled a trip to the Big Apple next month and I intend to show this little girl the time of her life. | | |
